Sometimes when I paint a subject, it will trigger a memory of a masterpiece by a favorite artist. This painting reminds me of the luminous copper themed still lifes of William Merit Chase, one of my favorite 19th C painters. The Dahlias are from my garden. I loved expressing their form with temperature shifts and lively mark making. The butterfly, a “clouded sulphur” was found on my daily walks and completes the composition positioned just slightly off the center of interest.
